After a week full of suspense, Center Hill High School defeated Gentry 45-8 in Friday’s Homecoming game.
Sophomore football player Ashton Dunnigan stayed optimistic before the game. “I’m excited—we will prevail,” he explained confidently. “You can hear it out of the speakers, and you can feel it in the atmosphere. Everyone’s anticipating this…we will win.”
Other students agreed, feeling more positive compared to earlier in the season. “I am very excited,” said junior Olivia Wooten. “All of our games have been very sad and rainy, so this game I feel like there’s going to be a whole bunch of people, and it’s going to be very fun.”
Although the first quarter was slow with only 1 touchdown, the 2nd quarter was where the heat cranked up with multiple touchdowns from star player Lawrence Autry.
The gap in points between Gentry and Center Hill accumulated, with the Mustangs raking up the score to 21-8 right by the end of the 2nd quarter.
After halftime, the team breezed through the 3rd and 4th quarters, gaining 24 more points total, cementing the Mustangs victory over Gentry.
It wasn’t just the students feeling the hope. On a solo mission to hype up the crowd, one man in the stands showed his Mustang pride, cheering loudly. Who specifically was he rooting for? “My son,” he shared, “Connor Floyd.”
This wasn’t his 1st Mustang rodeo, either. “I do it every game,” he explained, “just trying to get everyone enthused and into the game. If I’m not my son’s biggest fan, who’s going to be?”
The Mustangs will travel to Hernando to take on the Tigers this Friday, September 27th.
