Review: Zayn’s “Mind of Mine” attempts to shed singer’s innocent boy band image.

Mind of Mine is the debut album of former One Direction band member, Zayn Malik.

The album is a clear attempt by Malik to shed the innocent boy band image he had previously and does exactly what it sets out to accomplish.

Every part of the album radiates maturity from his tremendous vocals, to the exploration of more mature themes like sex and drugs using catchy and melodic R&B beats. Songs like his debut singles “PILLOWTALK” and “LIKE I WOULD” do a great job of combining mature themes with great vocals and good production to create solid records.

Many of the songs like “rEaRvieW” and “wRoNg ft. Kehlani” highlight Malik’s vocal ability and artistry, making up for some of the lyrically lacking moments of the album like “BeFoUr” and “dRuNk”.

Highlights of the album for me include the powerful single “PILLOWTALK”, the beautiful “INTERMISSION: fLoWer” sang in Urdu, and “wRoNg”, the duet with the amazingly talented Kehlani.

Overall, Mind of Mine is solid electronic R&B record and I recommend to fans of Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas, and the Weeknd.

Rating: 7/10.
