K’NyJa Richmond, a student at Center Hill High School, is no ordinary teenager. While many her age are still exploring their interests, Richmond has already built her own thriving nail business outside of school. Balancing academics, extracurricular clubs, and entrepreneurship, she exemplifies determination and ambition.
“I always loved nails and getting my nails done when I was younger,” she explains. “About three years ago, I saw a nail class coming to Memphis, so I went. I really enjoyed doing them myself. Then I became really good, and my family members always encouraged me to start my own business and take clients.”
Starting her business was no small feat, but Richmond took a strategic approach. “I started my business through word of mouth and advertising,” she shares. “All of my family always saw my nails and would tell their friends and other family members. I also used social media to advertise my nails online, which brought me more clients.”
Despite her success, she faced challenges along the way. “A challenge I faced was trying to get clients. I overcame it by advertising more. That was something I always struggled with, but posting consistently and having people mention me helped me overcome it.”
What sets Richmond apart is her unwavering focus on education. “I always put my schoolwork before anything else,” she says. “I do this because I think my education is very important. It can be challenging, but I know my priorities.” Her discipline allows her to excel academically while staying active in school clubs and maintaining her business.
The rewards of running her own business go beyond financial independence.
“The most rewarding part of running my own business is being able to be my own boss,” she notes. “I can make my own schedule and have my own money. I also get to be creative with my clients.”
Creativity plays a big role in her work, especially when clients trust her to design something unique. “Some of my favorite nail trends to do are French tips, but I love when my clients let me freestyle and give me a chance to be creative on their nails.”
Looking ahead, Richmond has big plans for her nail business. “I plan to have it as my source of income while I go to college. I always want to keep doing nails. It’s a passion of mine.”
