Mustangs stampede into volleyball, football
The Center Hill Mustangs had two major season openers last week, with volleyball on Aug. 17 and football on Aug. 18.
The Lady Mustangs dropped the match after losing three sets against the Southaven Chargers.
“We just got out performed,” head volleyball coach Rachel Green said. “This group of girls has it all. Great defense, great offense and a positive attitude.”
Grace Haney, who Green said was “the heart of the team,” suffered a knee injury early in the first set.
“After Grace got hurt, we just couldn’t regroup,” Green said. “The girls came to practice Friday morning and worked twice as hard. We played in the Collierville Tournament Friday and Saturday, and Friday night the team looked completely different and went 2-1 on the night.”
In football action, the Mustangs lost a hard fought battle against the St. George’s Gryphons with a final score of 34-20.
“I thought our kids played well, for the most part,” head football coach Alan Peacock said. “We have a ton of new starters on both sides of the ball, and hopefully they will continue to get better as the year progresses.”
“I was very proud,” Peacock said. “Even after the struggles we had, and we got down 14-0, our kids fought back and tied the game going into halftime.”
