Youth and Government Club prepares for state conference

The Center Hill Youth and Government Club is entering its second year of competition, and the group is more ready than ever for the Mississippi Youth Legislature Conference in Jackson, Mississippi.

“I think they’re a solid group that should do extremely well against the experience of the coastal schools,” sponsor Toni Coleman said. “We’re a young group, but we’re a smart group.”

The delegates are bringing a diverse collection of bills to Jackson from education policy to expansion of felons’ rights. Vice President Flannery Egner said she is thrilled to present her bill on cutting the state superintendent of education’s salary.

“It’s a needed change because of Mississippi’s already low national ranking in education,” Egner said about Carey Wright. “She is profiting off of money that should be going to better state education.”

State conference is Nov. 8-11, and club members are moving into their practice phase. Delegates will begin practicing debating their bills and learning parliamentary procedure to follow proper congressional debate guidelines.
